Practice Tips for Bass Guitarist
Bass guitar is classified in to melodic instrument, thus beside we must concern the drum pattern but also must have a proportional note arrangement. Therefore, improvisation in playing bass guitar is a required skill. It needs seriousness and perseverance absolutely, in another words, a musician must be discipline.
Here are some tips to practice improvisation skill in playing bass guitar :
- Learn to sing the melody from any music instruments beside bass guitar, moreover it could be from vocal sources. This is purposed to familiarize musician’s comprehension in note composition, therefore we will be able to do improvisation like we are walking.
- Do a “solfege”, means playing what you sing by bass guitar, it another word, convert it to the bass play. Notice that each tone from your vocal is quite similar with your bass play. Then after you have accustomed it, you will be able to control each note you play.
- Embellish the bass guitar melody rhythmically and make it swing, but don’t be pleonastic because it will make you hard to focus on pattern and beat.
- Determine the scale you play in bass guitar, find out where the root is.
- If you have somebody around, ask him/her to play some chords and then you put your bass guitar melody on it to hear how your playing matches the chords.
- Repeat the practice with another different scale position, so you’ll have a good intuition in chord analysis.
The best way to make our bass guitar playing more interesting and listenable is to do the practice step by step. Start with a simple structure as your capability at present, don’t be rush because the most important thing is that you are really understand what you play and how your bass guitar could give a good improvisation. Everything will be better if grows itself naturally without pressure, just do the practice frequently in every day.
